UPPER HUTT BOROUGH COUNCIL
The fortnightly meeting of the Upper Hutt Borough Council was held last night, the Mayor (Mr. P. Robertson) presiding. There were also present, Councillors E.. \V. Cottle, C. L. A. Spearman, A. Howell, J. Blewman, W. Greig, M. H. Hood, G. H. Guthrie, and J. O. Duff. A request from tho Silvcrstream School Committee for the erection of x"scool" siguboards at the railway crossings at Whiteraan's Valley road and Gloucester road, Silverstream, -vvas i-eferred to the Wellington Automobile Club A grant of £5 was made to the Upper Hutt School Committee towards the establishment of a children's library at the school. The money will carry a £ for £ subsidy from the Education Board. An offer to act as motor-cycle traffic inspector for the Petone, Lower Hutt, and Tipper Hutt boroughs was made by a Trentbam resident. A sum of £2 5s a week from each, borough would cover salary and the maintenance of his own cycle. Tho offer was being made to the other boroughs. The council received the- letter and asked the Public Service Committee to report on the whole system of traflie control in the borough. The borough sanitary . inspector reported that four cases of scarlet fever, one of diphtheria, two of pneumonia, and one of tuberculosis had occurred in July. The Town Clerk (Mr. J. "VV. Harbord) reported that in July thirteen permits were' issued for buildings to the total value of £6284 Ifls.
