The appointment of Admiral Sir Frederick Field aa First Sea Lord, in succession to Admiral of the Fleet Sir Charles Madden, dates from to-day. Sir Charles Madden, who was appointed to the post in July, 1927, has spent over half a century in the service. He is 67 years of age. Sir Frederick Field is 49, and entered the service in 1884. He relinquished the command of the Mediterranean Fleet last May. Admiral Field was in command of the Special Service Squadron, H.M.S. Hood and H.M.S. Bepulse, in 19&5-24 on its, Empire cruise, which included a visit to New Zealand.
