PETONE BEAT WATERSIDE. ■ -Tn. the Petone-Waterside match, which ended in Petone's favour (4-1), spectators at the Basin Reserve at tunes were treated to bright football. Petone had the better of the game in the. first_half, and the second spell was all theirs, Waterside failing to produce the form shown on previous occasions. The teams were:— Waterside: Porteous; Abernethy, Bolton; Moon, Haines, Cummings; Dunlop, punsmuir, M'Kee, Wilson, Cullen. _ M-Vean; Brown, Haines; M'Anslin, Campbell, Smith; Baistow, Knox, Leslie, Dodds, Craig. Referee: Mr, F. Sanders. ■ Both teams made the pace fast from the ktart. Waterside being the first to score. Petone pressed, and then when the Waterside defence relieved the pressure, Dunsmuir received an opportunity close up and toade no mistake with the shot. Waterside 1, Petone 0. One goal down, Petone feet about to even matters, Leslie particularly being prominent. Craig was spectacular on the left wing, and while the flefence was attending to him an infringement occurred, Petone being awarded a Penalty. Leslie's shot found the mark. 1-1. The nest five minutes produced some fine football which thoroughly thrilled the crowd. It seemed impossible for Wateraide not to score, but the defence was Jnbre than equal to the occasion. Fortune changed quickly, and the next goal |ame unexpectedly. Knox let fly sonic Itwenty yards out and completely beat jfhe goalie. Petone 2, Waterside 1. Pejtone kept up the pressure, Porteous being thoroughly tested with shots from Craig Sand Leslie. Waterside were called upon 3». defend- for a considerable spell. In sake -wing play on the right, Petone workifed up to position, Waterside defending Strongly all the time. Knox snapped up sm opportunity when a few yards out, and Sifted a shot over the heads of the backs Snto the net. Petone 3, Waterside 1. Petone continued to enjoy the advantage Jill half-time was called.. ■Petone pressed in the second spell, and, 'through Knox, forced a corner. Cullen, Sa conjunction with Wilson, worked down the wing, but his effort ended lamely. A sjreat effort by Dodds almost brought results, the ball missing by a narrow margin. ' In a burst of speed 'Leslie dashed lipfield hi characteristic style, but his shot ;tras weak. M'Auslin passed to Knox, who jtransf erred ,to Baistow. The latter crossed, and Leslie shot an easy goal. Petone 4, Waterside 1. The final stages ipf the game were all Waterside's, the jmatch ending without further score.
