THE PROPOSED RAMP
(To the Editor.)
' Sir,—At present there is considerable controversy concerning a proposed ramp at Petone railway crossing. . This crossing is no doubt one of the safest in the Dominion, and with one or two minor imprvementa to the signalling devices-which, I understand, are to be effected in the near future, accidents should never occur. The advocates of this ramp do not apparently travel on any other road or it may have occurred to them that there is far more risk of accidents at both Porirua and Paraparaumu crossings. In both these cases it is necessary for the front wheel of your car to be almost on the railway line before you can see if both ways are "all clear." If you stop, as the notice says, you have very little chance of getting out of the way should a train be approaching. The amount of money, £60,000, suggested as' necessary for the ramp at Pc: tone would surely be sufficient to make ramps at both Paraparaumu and Porirua crossings.—I am, etc.,
