The crowd appeared to be very thin at' Hastings yesterday, when the Hawkes Bay Winter Meeting commenced.. It improved'a little, but was still-below par at the best part of the day. The club was unfortunate in that several outsiders prevailed, with the result that the totalisator returns fell from the £10.477 for. last-year' to £0035.. The Buy was cold and bleak, but remained fine until after the last.event, when ram began to fall. The track for the time of year was fast. ■'".'■ There were no serious results/to horse or rider through falls in' the jumping events, .but Highland Mystery, a five-year-old Heather Mixture gelding of mediocre class,, ran his last race in the Hastings Handicap.
