A DESPERATE DUEL
BOLD FRONT BEATS CHOPIN
(By Telegraph, from "Vodette.")
The concluding event at Hastings yesterday, the Heretaunga Handicap, was a peculiar race, for after Chopin had been left standing at the start and Bold Front had been cut back to a bad last at the half-mile, they fought out a desperate finish, with only a nose between them, Bold Front being the winner. Both returned lucrative prices. Aston, Paiko, and Golden Shadow showed out first from Queen's Choice arid Llyn Dhu. When they reached the half mile Aston, Lyn Dhu, and Bernera were showing the way to Golden Shadow, Paiko, and Queen's Choice, with Chopin running up fast and Bold Front last. There was little between Aston, Bernera, Llyn Dhu, Chopin, Golden Shadow, and Paiko as they turned for home, but Chopin gradually forged ahead. Over the last hundred, yards he was tackled by Bold Front. A desperate tussle saw Bold Front score by a nose. Moutoa Treasury waa two lengths back third, with Aston fourth in line with Paiko. _ Then came Llyn Dhu and Queen's Choice. , Bold Front showed his stamina, and had a track to suit him. At the. same time Chopin's effort was striking,' for he had to go all out for live and a half furlongs after being 'left. Undoubtedly he should have won,.' Moutoa Treasury struck trouble in tht middle stages, and ran a creditable race. Aston looked too burly, but Llyn Dhu and Paiko had every chance.
