FIRST DIVISION

SEATOUN BEAT INSTITUTE. Seatoun and Institute met in a championship game on No. 2 ground at the Basin Keserve, both teams having failed to enter for the Chatham Cup competition. After a hard-fought game, a feature of which was the fine recovery made by Institute towards the end, Seatoun obtained the verdict by 4 goals to 2. Seatoun had the strong southerly wind at their backs in the first spell, and the Institute backs had a lively time in the opening stages in keeping the suburban forwards at bay. . Finally, the pressure proved to be too strong, and Tomkins open. Ed the score with a fine shot, Melville, the Institute goalkeeper, just failing toget to it. Seatoun 1, Institute 0. Institute attacked from the kick-off, and in spite of the strong wind, made good progress upfield until they were checked by Seatoun's last line of defence. Bilby and Cooley were seen in some attractive work for Institute, but Seatoun's defence proved solid. Henderson sent his forwards away and Seatoun improved their score by one, Tompkins scoring his second goal. Seatoun 2, Institute 0. Institute were now feeling the strain of battling against the wind, and for. the remainder of the first spell Seatoun held the upper hand without difficulty, putting on two more goals through the agency of T. Kershaw jmd M'Kenzie. Institute attacked strongly right from the commencement of the second spell, and it appeared to be a question of how many goals would come their way before the final whistle.- They had the Seatoun backs to reckon with, however, and they found them a stern obstacle in the path to victory. J. Kershaw played a prominent part in defensive work in the early part of the second spell, his strong kicking proving a great asset. Institute were getting by far the larger share of the ball, but their work in front of the goal was very disappointing, chance after'chance being thrown away. Eventually constant pressure brought its reward, ami May sent the leather home, and just before the end Maddocks beat Parkin with a swift low shot. The game ended Seatoun i, Institute 2.
