Star Comet's Condition. The latest repo: ' about Star Comet is ' that his condition has shown an improvement, and he may yet run, His trouble '" is thought to have been brought about by '" the horse licking some paint off his -1 trainer's stables, which have just been ' painted. Proved in the Mud. The winter racing season, with its kiyhcr scale of weights and deeper ground, suits some horses better than others. Some , breeds in particular shine during the winter season. Trentham Track Notes, t Although Trentham will have a fair , . -^Kti-igent racing at Otaki, there is not * great deal of work being done on the , local tracks. Miss Ransom, who is gal- . loping in improved style, continues to please her trainer, and Panther and Tourist are shaping satisfactorily. Staghuhter, who is to make his reappearance at Otaki, is also going well in his work. ■ E. J. Murtagh has Arikinui, First Money, Rational 11., and Rasouli back in work again. Back to the Pen? '; Mr. H. A. Wolfe, / chairman of the ' Queensland Turf Club's stipendiary stew- " .irds, tendered his resignation last Thurs- . day, and it is understood he is .taking '" lip an engagement in Sydney. It was expected that the matter would- be dealt ,„ with by a meeting of the committee the following day, when the mail left. Mr. Wolfe for many years wrote for the Sydney "Referee," and later the "Austivilas; ian," under the well-known pen name of "Cardigan," and he resigned from the . latter position to take up the Queensland stipendiary chairmanship. It was freely admitted that he and his colleagues were responsible for excellent work in Brisbane, but racing in Queensland has been going through a period of vicissitude, and recently formed the subject of a Royal Commission. Riccarton Track Work. There was riot a great deal of excitement at Riccarton yesterday morning, the number of horses in fast work being considerably reduced, owing to the absence of several trainers who are taking teams South for the Dunedin Meeting. All the galloping was done on the No. 7 grass track, which was in excellent order. Toawai moved freely in a spin over six furlongs, which ho covered in lmin 17sec. • Th-> brother to Arikiwai is hot at his best yet, but he is coming on nicely. Pangolin was given a i seful gallop over a mile, taking lmin 22sec for the last sis furlongs. lie looks in good order for hurdle engagements at Wingatui. Sapient and Arrow Maid were associated in a half-mile sprint, which they reeled off in 50 1-Ssec. The pair moved in good ■ style throughout, and they should perform well in engagements near at hand. ' Knockany, Miss Bradbury, and Gnsran^e were companions over iive furlongs. Knockany Rot a break at the start, and beat Miss Bradbury home in lmin 2 Z-o sec, with Gasrange three lengths away. It was a smart effort. ...•■ :' ■ Ranelagh and Troilus set out tor., a seven-furlong gallop, but Troilus was no use to his mate, who went brilliantly, covering the lust six furlongs in lmm ' 15 3-ssec, and finishing ten lengths in front. Ranelagh is in great order at present, and he should earn some money at tho Dunedin Meeting. ' Starshootcr and Haze got to the end of six furlongs in Imin IS 3-ssec. a useful wallop; while Royal Mint and Rascal occupied, lmin 19 2-usec over the same around. These four will represent 1). ]'. Clavidge's stable at the Dunedin Meeting, where they should pay. their way. . : imorist covered six furlongs in lmin 37see. He jumped, well earlier m the ■week, and he should lie seen to advantage in. hurdle events at Wingatui. Canterbury Items. A. E. Ellis will ride Arikiwai, Rin Tin Tin, Wingatui, and Palermo in their engagements'on the fust day of the Diincdin Meeting. . ,■ ' ' " v>- ' The horses in work at present at Kiccar ton include ciuito a number. of young horses, some of them being two-year-olds who have not raced. A few oE these juveniles have just reached the stage of having fihort sprints, and their progress during tho next couple of months will provide a deal of interest. V. Christmas has cancelled his proposed trip to Wingatui with Zeuxis and Garvary. Tho former is shaping well in his schooling, and he may win a hurdle race before long. R. W. King Ims decided not to raw Gala Day and Aberfeld.y at the Dunedin 'Meeting. Gala Day has shaped well in his schooling oven fences, but his oivncrtrainer considers he requires more education before he tackles severe country iii a race. Aberfeldy is backward, and thus not likely to show winning form. The paiv should do well later in the winter.
