NOTES FROM AWAPUNI

(By Telegraph.)

(Special to "The Evening Post.")

PALMERSTON JS\; This Day

Matters were uninteresting at Awapuni yesterday 'morning for, with tho trucks extremely heavy, there was little of a fast nature attempted. Of those 'engaged at Auckland, Mister Gam]-), Aurora Borealis, and Hymestrasoii were jumped,- the. lastnamed leaving for Ellerslie the same evening. The other pair went north last night and it is anticipated by their connections that they will run prominently. With R. Reed in the saddle, Mister Gamp, in company with Robbie's Mistake, ran a mile yesterday morning, the last six furlongs taking lmin 30 2-Sseo. The chestnut gelding was quite anxious to go on with, it, and, despite his list 51b, he will, have many local supporters on the day. Four Aces is also booked to go north, and he was sent over a round of the batens the reverse way to give a very satisfactory display. A. M'Donald was to have gone north to ride Four Aces and Hymestrasori, but .the horseman was uncertain whether he would forego the trip in favour of the Otaki Meeting. Mrs. M'Donald's stable will bo represented by Airforce and others at Otaki, and it is not improbable that Alan M'Donald will be associated with the Warplane gelding at Otaki. Yesterday morning Airforce did a round of the. battens to give a satisfactory display, but it would appear that the day alone will decide who will be his. pilot. W J Bowden will be associated witli Mister Gamp in his Great . Northern Hurdles essay, while J. P. Coylc s other candidate, Pahu, will be piloted by h.-fe. Bagby. The last-named has not been in work any great length of time- after his spell, and it appears to be asking rather too much of him to win in consequence, but he cannot be hurriedly dismissed nevertheless. . . OTAKI, ENGAGEMENTS. Palmerston North horsemen and horses claiming engagements at Otaki, are:— R. Reed: Ridgemount, The Swell, Merry Melody, Patearoa, and probably Terra Firma. • K. Voitre: Myola, Callanmore, Coon Song, Tourist. C. Broughton: Merry Damon, Avro, and Magic Land. " I J. Nicolson: Moutoa Treasury. H. Wiggins: Keddar, Robbie's Mistake. . M. Gilmore: Moutoa's Acre. • B. H. Morris: Glenrossie. W. Broughton: Arrowhead, Equitant, Llyn Dhu. T. Metcalf did not return home after the Ashburton Meeting, the local horseman going straight on to the Dunedin fixture. In .the event of Alan M'Donald not gong .north to Ellerslie, he will probably be associated with Airforce and Potoa,'orm at Otaki. i Dobbin is down to compete the Otaki fixture, but no horseman has been engaged for him as yet. Incidentally, Dobbin's trainer, E W. Watson, has a rising three-year-old by Royal Divorce—Railand in work, but the filly is a very plain looker, although time might prove that she has her dam's pace. dENERAL. Corneroff, who has been purchased by Mr. C. F: Vallance, is being put to the jumping'game, and was yesterday put over the battens by Alan M'Donald. The Danilof gelding has a fair amount of pace on the flat, and might well make good in this branch of the game. Trojan Melody is an unlikely starter on the .'first day .at Otaki, and G. W. New's stable may be represented on the.Kings Birthday by Terra Firma, a commanding Acre youngster. Trojan. Melody will no, doubt be found in on the second day. 'Blacksmith, an Arrowsmith gelding in Mrs. A. M'Donald's stable, has been pur-, chased at a high figure by one of the lady trainer's patrons. The youngster has shown a good turn of speed in his. track essays, while he has the added ability to jump. He is due to come in on the second day at Otaki, but some doubt meantime exists as to whether he is at home in the heavy' going. ' .. , . Mrs. M'Donald has taken m hand the two youngsters purchased by Mr.A. Symes at the Trentham sales, the one being the Chief Ruler—Marcelir. , who is a brother to -Princess Betty, and the__other a Paper Money youngster out of -xango, the dam being a half-sister to Pavlova and^ Anitea, the dam of Rapier. ' /Elicit, who was compelled to forego his trip to Auckland, is back in active work, but a doubtful leg makes it questionable whether much will be asked of him for some time to come. Bed Fuchsia, on the other hand, is still out iv the paddock, and there is little prospect of his beins asked to race again this season. . Braggart, who claims an engagement in the Maiden at Otaki, will not fill his engagement on the first day at least. A big upstanding sort, he shows rather much daylight underneath to ' handle heavy going. .
