HIGHWAYS FUNDS

GRANTS BEING SPENT

An inquiry was recently made by the ! North Island Motor "Union as to how local bodies were spending the subsidy granted by the Main Highways Board. At to-day's meeting of the executive of the North Island Motor Union, Mr. M. H. Wynyard, motorists' representative on the Main Highways Board, stated, in reference to the Government grants of £235,000 under the Main Highways Act, that £200,000 a year was paid from the Public Works fund to theAboard's construction fund, and £35,0(T0 from tho Consolidated Fund to the board's revenue fund. Thei amounts, therefore, formed integral parts of the board's construction and revenue funds respectively, which were being expended by tho board on con-1 struction and maintenance of highways. The association could rely on tho fact that the £235,000 was being spent by the board.
