"SAFETY FIRST"

CARRIERS' AID SOUGHT

A "safety first" campaign was under review by, the esecutive of the North Island Motor Union to-day, when members considered a report by Mr. H. C. Jones, placed before the association in April. The report suggested that diplomas should be awarded to drivers who were free from accidents for stipulated periods. - , Mr. F.i J. Hill (Wanganui) said he doubted very much whether many guineas would be obtained from firms just now. The firms would probably take up the view that they had good drivers and were satisfied. Mr. E. M. Chudwick (Napier) sugr gested that carrying firms should gi ?e bonuses to their drivers who avoided accidents. . The secretary (Mr? H. J. Stott) said that Mr. Curtis was sympathetic With, the scheme, but he thought it was rather unwieklly to be started in Wellington. ■ J ■ Mr. 3D. A. Batt (■Wellington) moved that the details of the proposal be sent to the Carriers' Association for their consideration. Mr. F. J. Hill said that when submitting the proposals to the Carriers' Association they should point' out what, the North Island Association was doing j in the way of educating children. If the Carriers' Association, thought the j scheme was practical, they might take j it up. ■ Mr. Baft emphasised that the proposed scheme was part of a safety first j campaign. The association was spending a considerable amount of, money on the children's part of the campaign. The association decided that the proposals'should be sent to the Carriers' Association for its consideration.
