MOTOR REGISTRATION

OWNERS HANGING BACK INSURANCE LAPSES OK SATURDAY Those in charge of the arrangements for the re-registration of motor-vehicles and the issue of plates and licences had some faint hopes that this year owners wouia attend to the business steadily, instead of waiting to the last day or so, and then rushing the Concert Chamber staff off its feet, and, incidentally, keeping themselves lined up in queues quite unnecessarily. However, those hopes have not-been realised, and with but three more days to go only about half the owners have up. Xast year's total city registrations were 12,083, and this year that figure will certainly be exceeded; up til. this morning only 6352 new registrations had been made. The City Council has issued about 4000 drivers' licences, the best day being yesterday, with a total of 681. To have avoided the last day rush a daily record of 1000 should have been maintained, but that figure has never '; been approached. In order to meet the convenience of those who cannot attend in the day time the office will be ojleu on Friday night, but it will be closed ou Saturday \ afternoon, and it will finally close on Monday afternoon. ,

The Post and Telegraph Department is writing to-day to the Police Department and.the City Traffic authorities asking them to co-operate in stimulating the memories of motorists who persist in forgetting, as demonstrated by their use of old plates after Saturday. The memory-jogging will commence with the taking down of names and numbers, and may reach a splendid climax in the Magistrate's Court. Owners of motor-vehicles will be wise to note that the third-party insurance cover lapses on Saturday unless renewed. To delay re-registration and renewal of this cover may, with a little bad luck, turn out an exceedingly expensive business. ■ • ■
