FLAGS FROM SAMOA
| (To the Editor.) , Sir, —Last week I read in your'■ paper some controversy over the German flag which-is. now in -Auckland. It-was stated that this flag was the. first and original flag to be hauled-down by the British or sJew Zealand *-'troops at Samoa. This is riot correct. When .the it oops, landed at the pier in Apia /Harbour the., nearest building on.which a. German flag was flying was the Customs, or.harbour .officials' building, which lay. to the right of the pier. The; flag was art ensign, with the eagle in centre, and anchor in the corner, and two letters on. This was the first flag hauled down, by two Medical Corps boys, and it is now in the possession of one of them in Wellington. The.flag which is in Auckland was not hauled'down until the landing party reached Vialima, the Governor's residence, so it therefore loses the distinction of being the first flag taken b,y British soldiers on territory occupied by the enemy. The above statement can be fully vouched for.—l am, etc., F. RICHARDS.
