SCOTLAND'S PAST

PRESENT-DAY APATHY

A vigorous appeal for a revival o£ interest in Scottish literature, music, and traditions was made by Mr. R. H. Nimmo, chief' of the \v rel]ington Caledoniau Society, at the annual meeting last evening. During ( the seven years'.in-which he had been chief, said Mr. Nimmo, be had always .stressed the necessity of carrying out the'aims of. the organisation iv terms of the constitution. It was nothing short of a tragedy that there should be an increasing lack of interest in Scottish matters on the part of Scots, particularly the younger generation, not only in Wellington, but throughout the Dominion and the world generally. On all hands there were to be found a growing appetite for empty,;pleasure .and a desire to pass by the beautiful things of life.' There was indifference to everything appertaining to Scottish folklore, history, literature, music, and all the glorious traditions of the race. Anyone who suggested putting on a Scottish concert nowadays .was regarded as almost feeble-minded. That was ■ a strong statement, but it was borne out by facts. Mr. Nimmo referred to the visit of Mr. AVilliam Heughan. to the Dominion, and said that the great Scottish artist had expressed himself as being heartbroken at the lack of interest in Scottish music'and history .in. this- country. : ~. .1 :...,' In conclusion Mr. Nimmo said that the directors intended to leave no stone unturned, to stimulate interest .in the society audits objects. He appealed to all Scots to join the society and assist in making up some of the leeway. One of the honorary life chieftains (Mr. G. .Lauchlan.) endorsed ,Mr. Nimmo's remarks,, and.expressed the ; hope.that.they would be-taken -to: heart: by every Scot in New ■ Zealand. . ■ - .1 . > ,
