BRITISH SAILORS' SOCIETY

To-morrow members and helpers of the British Sailors' Society will make a street collection for the funds of the society. Those who subscribe will have the satisfaction of knowing that they are helping a good cause, for the society carries out a very needful work in a seaport city such as Wellington, and lias done so for the past twenty, years. The number of men using the rooms of the society last year was 20.077, and that was rather less than usual because there was very little ship ping at Wellington during the winter months. The number of ships visited was 697. Much appreciated concerts are held at the society's rooms throughout the year, and picnics are arranged for all holidays when the weather permits. Nor is the spiritual side■ of the work among the sailors neglected. Sunday evening Gospel services, followed by a song service and home hour, and Brotherhood meetings on Tuesday nights, are a regular part of the work. Free refreshments are provided for the men in port every night, and last year the beds and breakfasts given to distressed seamen numbered S7O. Parcels of books and magazines, hand rags, etc., are placed on board Homewardbound ships, and comforts are regularly taken to seamen in hospital by the society's special visitor. Besides all these activities, numerous little kindnesses are done for the sailors by society members, such as posting and re-addressing letters and forwarding money orders to-wives and mothers.
