PETONE TECHNICAL SCHOOL

MR. M'FADYEN'S APPOINTMENT

Mr. A. -M'Fadyen, recently appointed to the principalship of the Pctone Technical High School, entered on his duties at the beginning of the week. He has for the last three years been Principal of the Timaru Technical School, which has shown marked development under his guidance, with the result that the numbers of students in both the day and evening classes have increased considerably despite the reputation enjoyed by the Timaru High Schools, two of the best and also ..two of the most popujar secondary schools in New Zealand. ' This is characteristic, however, of what is happening in all the technical schools in New Zealand, which are evidently fulfilling a useful purpose in, the education system. Previous to his appointment to Timaru, Mr. M' Fadyen was senior departmental head with complete charge of all the trades classes and courses in the Dunedin Technical College. Mr.' M'Fadyen has had a practical experience in engineering and a wide teaching experience embracing students of all types and ages, from those at the junior stages to university studcfits, and should be particularly well fitted to take charge of ' a technical school in an industrial centre like Potone. He is looking' forward to assisting in establishing and developing, witli the co-operation of the industrial "community and the residents of the district, a type of education peculiarly adapted to:'the needs of the district. Thn erect ion of the nejy workshops promised Kj§t::'the ■Education: Department should" adcl eonsiderablySto. the educational facilities of the district. .

Mr. M'Faclyen is a member of the New Zealand-Society of Civil Engineers, a member of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers, a B.Se. of London University, and a-Whit-worth Exhibitioner.
