REMITS FOR CONFERENCE

THE HILLS ASSOCIATION

NELSOX, 27th May,

" A, meeting of the Hills Fruit-growers' Association decided to send the following remits to the Dominion Fruit-growers' Conference:— "That the federation make a further effort to secure an alteration of the Local Control Act by substituting GO per cent, of; those voting.for CO per cent, of those on the roll. , ';■' ~

"That tlie Government be asked to make tho promised inquiry into local marketing conditions in the fruit trade a public inquiry and''hot'a departmental one. "That the Horticultural Uepartment.be, requested, to investigate the work being carried out at the Kast Maling research station, England, in relation to improvements of the orchards of the Dominion. "That in view of the possibility .of pooling and standardisation, the Department be requested to hold a school of inspection so as to ensure absolute uniformity of grading throughout New Zealand, and that the system of grading on points be given consideration.

"That the' time for receipt of remits be reconsidered. (Note.—lt is' extremely difficult to give these matters the consideration .they warrant at the height of the .packing season.) "That the subject of improved organisation in relation to the local marketing of apples and pears take precedence over all other remits, and that pn effort bo made to initiate 'the best scheme available, commencing with this season's fruit from the cool stores. "That the federation take the necessary steps to ensure the formation "of a pear growers' association in Auckland; Hawkes Bay, Canterbury, and Otago (an association has been formed in Nelson"); and that in the meantime the conference set up a central pear committee consisting of a delegate from each province, and that such committee, during the sitting of the conference, formulate a report and recommendations for a more efficient system .of marketing pears both for overseas and within the Dominion. : "That the federation publish separate balance-sheets for each of the branches— Viz., those at Nelson,:Hawkes Bay, Auckland, and Canterbury, setting out, inter alia, the turnover of each branch, total items of expenditure, and profit earned or loss made. •»..-■ "That the time has arrived when . the federation should inaugurate a system of trading on an indent basis for those customers who are. prepared to place such orders." , . Mr. A. M'Kee was appointed as the Hills' Union delegate to the . provincial conference. .
