TO AVOID AN ELECTION
FUSION OF PARTIES
MR, W. D. LYNSAR'S VIEWS
A strong plea for the fusion of' the United and Keform Parties, in opposition" to Labour, was made by the Reform member for Gisborne, Mr. W. D. Lysnar, in commenting y on the selection' of Mr. Forbes as Leader of the United Party. Mr. Lysnar pointed out that the question of leadership could well be left to the amalgamated parties to settle. In his own opinion, outstanding qualities of leadership would entitle Mr. >Coates to tho head of any amalgamation, but the question could well be left to the vote of the members of the party.
"The country does not want another election now, nor does any one of the parties, and this would bo one way to avoid an election at this juncture," Mr. Lysnar said. "I do not think'any of the United Party members nurse any grievances or personal antagonisms "against Reform, or against Mr. Coates; in'fact, I believe the younger men in politics to-day would welcome his lead ership "
lie had been, of the opinion for some time past, and had actually stated that opinion in the' House, Mr. Lysnar added; that a fusion of tho two non-So-cialist parties would'represent the salT.ation of New-Zealand in the political sense. • It, was the natural course to take at this stage, with no one of the three parties in the House holding a majority.
