PETONE IN PICTURES
CAN THE. CAMERA. LIE?
. A photograph which appeared in the ''Evening Post" of Saturday, 17th May, showing a portion of a Petone street under water, gave rise to some remarks by Petone Borough Councillors last night, several speakers claiming that the picture gave a wrong impression as to the effects of heavy rain in the borough. Councillor J. C. Burns drew attention to the matter. The photograph, he said, showed one of the Petone streets to be under water. It was not so much the photograph as the caption, accompanying it that he objected to. ..He had been spoken to regarding the picture by people from very far afield, who'■ wanted to know if Petone was still subject. > floods,, and• he considered those responsible should show more discretion, particularly with regard to an important botough lite Petone. Councillor V.' E. Jaeobson doubted the advisability of pursuing the matter further. ''We would need to be very careful," he. said, "or it may lay us open to a counter attack." '■' The Mayor (Mr. D. M'Kenzie): "They might publish all our photographs.'the borough inspector (Mr. ,W. a. Goughj said that .where the photograph had been taken the water reached nearly to the. middle of the road. The road was asphalted arid in the- photograph it looked as if the whole surface was water., mere was no water on the footpath.
