LAST NIGHT'S MEETING

The Minister of Labour (the Hon. W. A. Veitch) announced to-day that the conference of Wellington local body representatives last night for the purpose of considering ways and means of facilitating unemployment relief in the city' during, the coming winter, had. led to a very useful discussion which, was certain to bi'ing about a' good understanding between the authorities affected. , " , ■.■■'....

All the local, bodies invited to the conference were either represented or accounted for, and Mr. Veitch said the discussion was carried on on the understanding that for the moment neither the Government 'nor the local bodies should be definitely committed, but that each representative present should re-, port back to Ms particular body. Tlie Minister undertook to convey the views of the (conference to the Minister of Finance. Mr. Veiteh declared he. had no hesitation in saying that tho conference, which was regarded as being of a preliminary nature, had had the effect of bringing about a good under-■ standing between the. local bodies concerned, and the Government, and as a result he anticipated they would be able to put organised unemployment relief on , a better basis than ever before during the coming winter.. No one had been definitely committed. The first : thing to be done was to get the views of each of the local authorities on the question of providing relief, with the object of 'making definite arrangements very soon.
