MISS JOHNSON AND HINKLER

Miss Johnson is not the first, woman to fly from England to Australia, but sho is the first to make a solo flight, and sho also has the satisfaction of knowing that her timo is second only to the record of Bert Hinkler, which has stood since 1928. In the eight days that she- took to travel from Croydon to Calcutta she was two days ahead of Hinkler, but she lost timo. at Rangoon, where her machine had to be repaired, and this cost her two days. Sho Jost another..day between Rangoon and Singapore, and then came down in the village of Haliloelik, near Atamboea. Her completed time, just under 20 days, is four days behind Hinkler's feat in February two years ago.

The first woman to make the flight was Mrs. Miller, who in 1928 flow with Captain Lancaster in a Cimis-ongincd Avro-Avian after a trip which lasted five month's and proved very adven L turous. Rain, 'an injury to Mrs. Miller, and the discovery of a snake in the cockpit were among tho reasons for their delays.

Miss Johnson's record is as follows

Hinkler probably flow about' 12,000 miles in actually traversing this course, as the distances given are for straightlino flight. Hinkler broke records from the beginning, making the first non-stop flight from Croydon to Eome, flying for 13 hours, the last three hours in darkness, and landing by the light of flares.
