A HARD GAME.
Hutt mot and defeated University for ivlwt is stated-to bo the first time in then' ! history in a game full of incident and hard football. Vov most of the match it was a duel between the two sets of forwards, . Hutt willing and effective, University willing, but clumsy. The good material in the 1 University pack was rendered ineffective ,by rawness hi play; line-outs were badly ! spaced, scrums were only, reasonably pack- : cd, and in the loose hardworking forwards j were prone to lose sight of the ball and fail to find it in time. Hutt took full ' advantage of this. Their forwards played 1 with, more devil and considerable effect, I and in the first spell they were more than equal to their opponents. With the wind in their favour they made things hard for the losers, but met such vigorous opposition that they could not gain an advantage ' until the second spell, when the ball was ■ going out freely to the Hutt backs. Foden . seemed unable to get the ball from his forwards, and most of the time the 'Var- ■ sity back-line was waiting for chances ' which never came. With M'Kay in the '.' half-back position, Hutt were a different , team.. He had plenty of ball, was fast \ and tricky behind the scrum, and opened 5 the way for three of Hutt's tries. Hutt ; won by. 15 points to 6. The teawis were:— i Hutt: Jarman; Russell, Ball, Todd; Pomare, Feeney; ■ M'Kay; Monigatti; 11. Ilinton, G. Hinton, Roberts, Skilton, Peek, : Dowsett, Wood. , University: Webb; M'Kay, Rarason, i Eastwood; Griffin, Mackenzie: 1'odon; Ed- [ star; Beaumont, Blakelcy, Hart, Blacker, Diedrich, Claridge, Anio. : With the sun behind them and the Arctic wiiid favouring their kicking, Hutt '. opened at a brisk pace, and countered
strong 'Varsity attacks by hne-hnding, which cost the students much hard-earned ground. After iiftccn minutes' pjay, luunson opened University's- scoring with a penalty goal from wide out after a Hutt torward had handled in the scrum. U'lmn mulled to let the Hutt forwards through, and Hiere wore some exciting moments on the University line. In the detence, Edgar came up too soon, and Todd goaled easily from right in front. A fine opening by Feeney and a cross-kick by Todd was followed by Roberts diving over soon aitcrwavds. Todd missed the'shot, and at halltiino the score was: Hutt (i, University 3. in the second spell, after ten minutes, M'Kay came round the scrum in midneld, sold the dummy, passed to Russell, and saw Wood pick up as the wing was tackled and score at the corner. lodd failed to convert. University were dangerous, but were kept out by good kicking, and after another run by JM'Kay, Russell picked ill) and dived through the ruck to score. Todd missed again. The University backs then got the ball with room to work for almost the only time in the matcli, and Kumsou and Mackay outpaced the opposition, Mackay winning vight to (lie lino before sending an infield pass to liamson, who scored a classic- try under ; the posts. He missed the easy kick. The final score came after a desultory rush, 'Wood snapping xip to slioot over at the opposite corner. Pomare's kick missed, and the game ended with the score: > Hutt 15,. University G. ' -. ■ Mr. J. A. Wilson refcrecd. * 1 1
