AUSTRALIAN TARIFF
EFFECT OF NEW DUTIES .|
In connection with the information given to a "Post" representative yesterday^ and reported in last night's issue, ihat since the recent rise- in the Australian tariff there were large quantities of goods in bond in Australia which would be, if possible, dumped in New Zealand, Mr. W. H. Eobin, of W. E. Bird, Ltd., states ;that the goods at present in bond iv Sydney or on the water were still subject to the old duty, and merchants who hold stocks were not likely to part with them, as they were now worth a great deal of money.
,The new tariff came into force on 4th April. The new rates did not apply to goods in bond or shipped from an overseas port before that day. As contracts are very often inado months ahead, and as sufficient time has elapsed for goods affected by tho new duties to be in bond, it is very lively, as "The Post's" informant stated, that there are. a number of lines subject to the new duties now lying- in. the bond stores of Australian ports.
