POSTAL OFFICERS' PAY

(To the Editor.)

Sir,—Some weeks ago an announcement was made by Sir Joseph Ward" as Post-master-General that he had issued instructions for increased pay ,to be given to junior -officers in the P. and T. Service. This increase (it was said) would take those officers with 10 years' service (I think) to the top of their grade, £240 per annum, and incidentally increase proportionately the intermediate increments. Such increase was to. take , effect from the Ist" April. Discussing tho matter yesterday with some friends employed in the service, and r who should participate in the promised increase, I was astounded to hear that not only had the promised rise failed to materialise,,but further, they could get no definite information as to the date it would or as to what members would receive it. . .■

It is now several weeks since the data of the promised increase, surely ample time for even the slowest Department to have put everything in order for a simple matter like this. Perhaps the caucus of the Government Party to be held on Wednesday may contain one member who may be moved to inquire why the promise made by the-head of the Government has not been put into operation. The , Postmaster-Gen-eral's , regrettable illness may have had something to do with the delay, but even so, the officers concerned should have been advised. —I am, etc.,

TAXPAYER.

20th May.
