BRIEF LIBERTY
OUT YESTERDAY, BACK TO-DAY
Discharged from prison yesterday morning,- Charles Patrick M'Allister, alias Hanlcy, alias M'Bride, aged 30, had a very brief spell of. liberty, for this morning Mf. E. Page, S.M., sent him back to gaol for another six months. ' -. The act thVit led to M' Allistei-'s undoing was his theft of an.. overcoat, valued tit" & 7 7s, from the doorway of the shop of JS. C. Brown and Co., Ltd. He was seen by an. assistant1, who f ol-1 lowed him and had* him arrested'by Constable Fleming. M'Allister told the constable that he had bought the coat two days previously, but.this did not carry much weight, in view of the fact that M'Allister was then fri prison. If anything further was needed to cast doubt upon the accused's story, it was supplied by the- discovery of one of K. C. Brown '$ price cards in his pocket when" he was searched. - ;
"I don't remember anything about .the coat," replied M'Allister, when asked if lie had anything to say. "I was released from prison-yesterday, and I certainly had too much drink, and I don't' know where I was last night."
"This man has a long list of convictions for theft, assault, robbery, aud various other charges," remarked Mr. Page when sentencing the accused.
