MOTOR REGISTRATION
CITY AEEA OFFICE
PLATES, FEES, INSURANCE
This morning the special office for motor registration, payment of licence and plato fees, and third party insurance premiums was opened in the Concert Chamber of the Town.Hall,^ and a fair number of motor owners got through the business of! paying up. The office will be open each day frpm 9 a.m. to -1 p.m., until the end of the month, and possibly for a couple ofjlays in Juno also, but the Act requires the reregistration of all motor vehicles by Ist June, "and provides, moreover, for a stiffish penalty ,(£2O per day)" if vehicles are used aftei that date under the old registration numVers. There are several points which motorists should note before going iuong to the Concert Chamber*. — The office wil» deal with city area vehicles only. Motorists whoso machine? are registered in other districts, qs at Petonc, Lower Hutt, or Eastbourne, must apply to their own post offices and local authorities. ' ■ As licences have to be signed in the presence of the officials, personal application must be. made. For ,an owner to send round for a handful of forms, to fill them in, and send them back by the office boy will not sufflice. The forms have spaces for chassis and engine numbers; these should be looked up .and noted before going to the counters, otherwise an extra trip will be necessary. . . , INSURANCE AND MILEAGE. In regard to third party insurance, owners must themselves nominate the company with which they wish to do business (the^ officials are forbidden to make nominations), and must nominate one of the insurance companies listed on tho back of the form, as not all companies are parties to the scheme. • >It is also necessary that t owners should be 1 careful when dealing with this form in filling correctly the classification of their machines. The classification is'to be shown by number only in accordance with a detailed classification at the foot of tho form. A note on the* back of the form regarding tho classification of private and business cars should bo read carefully, otherwise the owner of a private car may find himself called upon to pay more than he need. An additional form this year is in respect of mileages run for the year ended 30th April and during the road life of the machine to that-date. The filling-in of this form is not compulsory, but is requested by the Transport Department to assist in the compilation of transport statistics. A glance at the speedometer will give owners a fair idea of the records of their cars, etc. Where no speedometer is fitted, as near an estimate as possible is requested. The City Council proposes to enforce in future Bylaw 64, which calls upon motorists to display in their machines cards giving names, addresses, etc. A typist will fill in the cards,' and a neat waterproof holder, to be laced round the steering column, may be purchased. i AVOID THE RUSH.. The arrangements made should be ample to enable at least 1000 registrations to be put through each 4»y without 'rush and bustle, but .if too many save the business up to the last day or so, they will have only themselves to blame for the delay and annoyance of waiting in a queue. So far this has been the experience each year, but by terrific collective concentration motorists may remember this year that as they'have to pay in any case they may as well pay in comfort. • ... , Last year 8000-odd registrations were put through at the Concert Chamber out of a Wellington total of 13,413. That latter figure was an increase of 2000 on the total for the previous year, and it is anticipated that this year there will be a further increase of at least a thousand. ' • There are two. main rules for registration: get in early, and read the directions -on the forms carefully.
