HELPING THE WORELESS

(To the Editor.)

Sir,—ln to-night's ."Post" appears an account of the drawing of a big art union, if being stated that the promoters will benefit substantially from the effort. If a private venture can make such a big success of this, why not anational art, union, organised by the Government, for the benefit of the unemployed? Raffles are run with great success by many European countries, notably Spain and Italy,: and they are regarded as practically an institution, with thousands of pounds invested in them every month. In promoting such a raffle the Government is providing an interesting form of investment and one that would prove of great benefit to the unemployment fund. An idea of the profits, made,by these art unions may be gained from a table published in you? paper in May, 1927, following on the "ait

union season" of that year:—Mammoth art union; profit £17,000; All Gold art union, profit £20,000; Gigantic art union, profit £18,500; Grand National art union, profit £22,000; Colossal .art union, profit '£13,000.- Of a total of twelve big art' unions held in that year, after deducting a total advertising expenditure of £73,000, the total conibined profit was £126,000. Surely this proposal is worthy of serious consideration. Profits of this nature would be very acceptable to such a worthy object as unemployment relief.—l am, etc., P.J.K.
