SELWYN BEAT MELROSE.

Mainly on account of their good back division, Schvyn scored a well-merited win against jUelrose at Wakeflcld Park. There was very little between tbe two, packs, but the Green backs outclassed the opposing rearguard, and alter the forwards had paved, the way they were able to successfully ihiisb oft' the good work. The M'lrose pack worked hard all the time a:. I had tiey recei red bette.- suppon from .the backs, who did not readily adapt themselves to the condition, they would almost certainly have opened their tally. Tight scrummaging-up and down the field, with neither side able to press home an advantage, marked the opening stages of the game. The backs did little else but kick, and there was a noticeable weakness in finding the line. From a free kick Leggatt drew first blood for Selwyn. Soon after, the Green forwards again forced their way on to the Melrose line, and a brief passing rush ended in Ward scoring. The kick missed, and the score at halftime was 6-0. The Selwyn backs handled the greasy ball surprisingly well in the second half, and two passing rushes spelt danger for Melrose. Ward was nearly across twice, only to be tackled close to the line. Selwyn persisted, and a loose forward rush headed by Nash led to him touching down. Leggatt converted. The Green backs were making the most of their opportunities, and threy the wet ball about in bright style. Another bout of passing, in''which all the backs handled cleanly, enabled Ward to get his second .try. Lepgntt ngnin go.nliiig. Then Leggatt. who had been playing an outstanding game at second Five-eighth, cleverly went through the opposition and scored beneath the posts. He converted his own try. Although Melrose battled their way back determinedly, they could not finish off the good work. They gave the Greens a hot'tune for a few moments, but without any luck, and the game ended: Sehvyn 21. Melrose 0.

Mr. J. Gilehrist was the referee.
