FINAL GALLOPS AT AWAPUNI
.(^Telegraph.) (Special, to "The Evening Post.!') PALMERSTON NORTH, This. Day. / : Despite the |act that Awapuni, furnishes a team of some twenty candidates at Wanganui, matters were somewhat quiet on the'tracks'yesterday morning. The tracks wore in excellent order, and, in the majority -of.; cases, what fast work that was attempted was carried out on the iplough,; Mrs. M'Donald did not bring Blue Paper and Airforce ' home from Hawera, : and Elicit, Potoaform, and Llyn Dv were taken through to Wanganui on Sunday to pick.up the.other pair. ;A. M'Donald is going -through each day to supervise their tracK operations: Birkbeck, who went sore at Hawera, was brought. home, and can be considered an unlikely starter. This centre fared comparatively well- at the Hawera fixture hy gathering in over £700: in stake-money. Of the trio who were returned winners, Brilliant Light and Aurora Borealis will be found at Waganui, but Merry Damon's next appear-, ance will be at Otaki, provided the Polydamon gelding is not accorded a prohibitive poundage by the handieapper., Brilliant Light was restricted .to caejf work yesterday morning, but the Austra 1 lym.iSun-gelding looks none the worse for his Hawera .tripi Coon Song, who claims an engagement in the same division of the Purua Hack' Handicap as Brilliant Light, was restricted to trotting exercise with trainer R. E. Hatch in the 'saddle. The trainer has another team member in Eioghail engaged, and the Graudcourt gelding, with K. Voitre in the saddle, left seven furlongs behind in, Imin 33 l-ssec,in company with Glenrossie (T. Green). ;;■ Hunting Boy had Poppy Day as a partner over six furlongs, but they were not asked to give of their best. in. getting to the end of their tdsk in Imin 22sec. Both are" inmates of L. Knapp's stable, and 'are both drawn in the Second Purua Hack Handicap at Wanganui, but whereas the former ranks at the head of the handicap, Poppy Day. is a maiden. ; Red Bank, who is down, to make.his' debut 'as a isteeplephaser at Wanganui, was .partnered by the iKaitoke Hack Hurdle candidate, Pour Aces, over a mile, the last six furlongs, being left behind in Imin 24sec.' C. Robinson was to have ridden Red Bank,,but with that rider being stood down for a month at Hawera, a new pilot, will have to. be" found. , , Although A. Quinliva'n intends being 'in attendance at Marlborough with Masher and Winloch, First Ruler will be at Wanganui, and will be a runner in the Kaitoke Hack Hurdles, in which H. Gordon will again be her pilot. The Chief Ruler mare appeared to have a great opportunity to prove herself in the weaker company at: Marlborough, but her connections preferred the fixture nearer home. A sluggish track worker, she required Imin 50% sec to run a niile yesterday morning. S. G errand will ride Winloch at Marlboroiy?h, but no rider has as. yet been found for Masher. ■ . - ' The Century Hurdles candidate,. Mister Gamp (H. Gordon), and the Hack Hurdles candidate Skyrider, with' a stable lad in the saddle, galloped a mile, and, timed from the -six-furlong post, ran home in Imin 24src. Both are well, but the break in the Bronzctti gelding's training may tell against him to-morrow., ';» GENERAL. Arrowhead (X, Voitre), who will make, a reappearance on the race track, at O.taki, had Keddar (Green) as a partner over five furlongs, the former being clear at the post after running the distance in Imin 6 1-5 sec. Keddar is still a long way from his old self. . ' ' . .Braggart and an • Acre—Wench gelding from Moutoa Lodge, had', a keen struggle all the way up the .straight, the former, who had the advantage in respect; to weights, although he had the outside running,; having his head in front at the finish after running the five furlongs in Imin ssec> Both are due to make their debut at Otaki. ■ G. W. New has the first of the progeny of Colossus in a; chestnut yearling, from Queen Elizabeth in work. A rich chestnut of good height and conformation, he showed distirtct promise in a sprint down the straight in company with Merry Damon. A three-quarter brother in blood to Ruapapa, the youngster will be heard from later on in his career. The Mountain Crag mare Lady Alophen was a visitor to the tracks yesterday morning, when she had as her pilot Ron Hatch, son of the local trainer. .Although quite at home in the saddle, Hatch junior promises to have 100 big a fiwno fo.r 'the game, although he might well have his chance as ail amateur rider. Meantime it is stated that Lady Alophen is to be used as a military ni.ount, but,'bred as sho is (Mountain Crag—San Fran mare), - she should make good in the jumping branch.
If there is anything in a name, a youngster apprenticed to R. B. Hatch at the present time should ride well, for ho has the name o£ Hector Francis Gray. .Although he gives one the impression o£
having a fairly large frame, the future may find him carrying on a name which liasl become very familiar to New Zcalanders. RIDING ENGAGEMENTS. Riding engagements announced for Wanganui where local horsemen and horses are concerned are as under: —If. Gordon, First Kuler; D. O'Connor, Mister Gamp; B. 11. Morris, Brilliant Light; A. M'Donnld, Eed Bank, Democratic, Elicit; T. I Green,. Hunting Boy, Tahoma, Koyal Parade; K. Voitre, Culla^imore, Coon Sou.^, Austcrity7 Treasury; ■W. Broughto.n, Grand iTury, Eiiuitant, Poppy Day.
'Provided lie secures liis licence in time1, J, M'Dbwell will have the ride on Kioghail. This apprentice has displayed great promise at exercise on the tracks, and It. E. Hatch, through whoso hands he has passed, predicts 'a, promising future for him.
