TRAM EXTENSION
QUESTION OF A POLL
VOGELTOWN AND MOKNINGTON-
The main subject, discussed at the annual meeting of the Vogeltown and Mornington Municipal Electors' Association last evening was the question of tho-extension of the Brooklyn tram to serve those districts* Tho, interest which is taken in the-matter was evidenced: by the large attendance of about a' hundred ratepayers and residents. ' '
The chairman, Mr. J. Staples, reviewiuil tho work of the association during tho past year, said that a fair standard of progress had been mado, but many of the promises made by the City Council had not yet been carried out. A letter was read from the Town Clerk stating that tho council had decided that the request of tho association that the Brooklyn tramway should bo extended to Mornington could not bo complied with owing to the present 1 position of the tramway department s finances. Tho only method by which I the necessary funds might be secured, tho latter stated, would bo by taking 1a1 poll of. the ratepayers, but it was felt that the present would be an inopportuno time to adopt such a course. In the event of the Wellington Land Company being prepared at some future date to reopen negotiations, and providing the finances of tho tramway department would permit of the work being carried out, the, council would be pleased to reconsider the matter. It was decided to ask the council whether the poll of ratepayers referred to in tho letter, meant all the ratepayers of tho city of Wellington, or merely the Mornington1 and Vogeltown district. It was- also decided to request that the approximate cost of tho proposed extension be supplied to the association, and the rateablo value of the district. The question of tho association co-operating with the South Wellington Land Company was also considered. It was felt that: a., great deal could be attained by the two bodies working together, and a motion was passed .accordingly. . _ Speakers sharply criticised the action 'of the council; in establishing a rubbish aiimp at Central Park, and a motion was' carried emphatically testing against the council's decision.
Officers for the ensuing year were elected as follows: —President, Mr. J. Staples; vice-president, Mr. J. Eussell; hon, secretary, Mr. J. Gibson; commit-' tee, Messrs. ''&.- Hadley, F. Brown, P. K. Kindell, 'W. F. Nuttall, G. Gregory, H. M. Lindsay, F. G. Wilson, F. T. Coles, J. P. Ballinger, and Mesdames Nind, Bennett, Staples, and Hughes.
At the invitation of the association, which has affiliated with .the Civic League, Mr. A. C. Blake, the, actingsecretary of.-the league, was , present. He addressed the meeting at some length? on the constitution, aims, and objects of the league, and said he.felt sure the association, would receive the support of the league in its efforts to secure better transport, drainage, and footpaths for the district.
