TOBACCO GROWING
THE PROSPECTS BRIGHT
' GOOD FOR BLENDING
(By Telegraph.) (Special to "The Evenino Post.") AUCKLAND, 13th May. A bright future for the tobaccogrowing industry in Now Zealand is held out by Mr. F. Adamson, director of the "CJuitcd Kingdom Tobacco Company, Limited, who. arrived at Auckland by the Ulimaroa. .Mr. Adamson's headquarters arc in London, but he makes periodical, visits to Australia and New Zealand.. ■"On my last visit to the Dominion 1 inspected several tobacco fields," he said. "My impression was that wlien the growers have ,an opportunity of studying the various grades required by manufacturers, they will be able to produce tobacco which, blended with imported tobacco, will meet all requirements. There arc prospects of the future establishment of an export trade in New Zealand tobacco. Some time ago my company purchased 23,000.1b, njid used it for blending with Virginian tobacco for cigarettes. . Tke experi-1 tnent was quite satisfactory." For the purposes of cigarette manu-'.j facturo New Zealand tobacco was slightly better that that grown in J Australia, Mr. Adamson said. Pipe tobacco was good, but.it also required blending. The standard tobacco, as fains public taste was concerned, was' MiuL grown in tho Eastern States 'of | America. The tobacco business generally wa3 still prosperous. There had been recently falls in prices .of tobacco shares on the Australian market, but this iva3 due only to general depression. If anything, the demand for tobacco was increasing and the industry, could not lose ground.
"We have certainly been affected by the increased tariff in Australia," Mr. Adamson said. "Indeed under present conditions we are making no profit at all on tho Australian market. However, my firm, in combination with others, has already decided to open 'a: factory in Australia, and oue will bo constructed - in Melbourne in the near future."
Mr.; Adamson will remain in Auckland until next week, and will then leave on a business tour of the' Dominion. He expects to be in New Zealand for about six*weeks.
