EUROPEAN AND MAORI
In the light of a survey of tho schools iir the Taranaki.district, Mr. N. ."&. M'Kenzie, 8.A., is of the opinion that, when the language difficulty is taken into account the Maori is the intelligent equal of^the European. This Temark was made in the course of a paper read yesterday to- the annual meeting of the Australasian Associa tion of Psychology and Philpsophy. He said that in writing, spelling, and mechanical arithmetic the Maori was superior to the white. The" Filipinos displayed the same ability in these subjects. The 'average age of the; Maori child in standard o was 14. The boys respectively, was 13 years C months and the girls 7 years 5 months. The average^ age for white boys and girls, respectively, was 13 years 6 months aud 13 years 4 months, while their tipie at schcfol was 8 years and S years and 3 months. ■
-"Do the white children begin school too early!" the speaker asked.
