THEFT AND ARSON
A CHR-iSTCHURCH SENSATION
(By Tefegraph.— Press 'Association.) CHEISTCHURCH, This Day. A fire attended by sensational circumstances occurred at a corner of Clyde road, Fendalton, early this morning. Thieves raided, a block of four shops by smashing in the front doors, and then set fire to one, a tobacconist's shop, tenanted by Fred. Whiteman. This shop was gutted, and th.c others were damaged by smoke and water, the brigade preventing their destruction. Subsequently the police found an abandoned . car in Linwood, with stock I stolen from the tobacconist's shop in it..
Although the objective of the thieves was probably the money left overnight by the occupants of the shops, this was overlooked.
In Mr. Birch's establishment, a pair of trousers had been taken out of the shop into a back room and placed on a gas ring ready to sot on fire. Those were not damaged; the thieves apparently cither'forgot about them or-be-came alarmed. --
..Later in the night, thieves, believed to be the same, entered a shop in Stanmoro road, jLinwood, and stole £14 from the till. 'They were disturbed and decamped, leaving behind on the road a motor-car which was stolen last evenLag from Cambridge terrace.
