CHANGES IN COASTAL SHIPS

Several coastal vessels owned by Eiehardson and Co., of Napier, are shortly "to be converted from steamers to motor-ships on' the count that the change will result in reduction in running costs. The vessels concerned are the Awahou, of 410 tons, built at Paisley, Scotlai d, in 1912, tho Pukeko, of 736 tons, built at the. Goole Shipbuilding Yards in 1928,' the Kapiti, 'of 242 tons, built at Paisley in 1902, the Kapuni, of 188 tons, built at Auckland in 1909, and the Hawera, of 174 tons, built at Auckland in 1912. The Awahou and the Pukeko are usually engaged on the East Coast and the other three trade between Wellington, Wanganui, and Patea.

"With the exception of tho Kapiti, the changes will be made- by Lowe and Co., of Auckland, towards the end of this month. The Kapiti will be converted at Wellington. Her new engines are being brought out from Great Britain and, consequently, it will bo some time before she is altered.
