STRAWBERRIES IN MAY

The wharfinger at Mapua reported to the Harbour Board that 620 C cases of fruit per day had. been handled at the port since the beginning of the export season. The following tables show the total number of cases exported from Mapua for April and the year to date, last year's figures in parentheses:— April: Export, 113,998 cases (75,545); local, 22,596 eases (7387); total, 136,594 cases (82,932). Total to end of, April: Export, 211,660 cases (16.2,322); local, 50,093 cases (23,732). ■- ;■■■;'_'■';

During the present apple export season 237,857 cases have been sent-over the Nelson Wharf. The enrrent month is also expected to be a busy one. '

The harbourmaster reported at the monthly meeting of the Harbour Board that 111 vessels entered and left the port during April. During the month 10,056 tons of inward cargo was received and 5608 tons outward. A grant of £50 was made to the Nelson Provincial Progresive League, and Messrs. A. Gould and H. E. Duncan were elected as the board's representatives on the league. ..■-..

In support of an effort on the part of the Whakatane County Council, the Waimea County Council to-day passed the following v resolution:—"That the Government be urged to increase the petrol tax to such a figure that would enable it to finance.future maintenance and construction cost on all primary highways in a permanent manner."

The Waimea County Council engineer, Mr. W. Bullivant, has furnished a report on the cost of permanently sealing the main highways from the Eichmond Borough to Wakefield on the Nel-son-Coast road, from Eiehmond to the foot of the Moutere Hills on the Bich-moud-Collingtvood section, and from. Nelson to the Lud Valley on the NelsonBlenheim ■, highway. The total cost would be £74,000. Copies of the report were submitted to members of the council, and the matter will be considered in a month's time.

The medical superintendent of the Nelson Hospital reported at the board's monthly meeting that 104 patients were admitted to the institution in April and 92 discharged, leaving 79. Thirtyseven S-ray examinations were made. There are at present 28 inmates in the Alexandra^ Home at Eiehmond for old people.

In the Waimea Defence Eifle Club's final shoot of the season, Ching counted out S. Thomas and Bloomfield for the championship feathers, and A. Thomas counted out Bloomfield for the handicap feathers. The winners and runners-up in the different competitions were as follow: —Bennett Championship Shield, twelve shots: A. C. Maisey 1064, H. Ching 1052. Bowers' Cup, 2nd class championship, 12 shoots: P. Wilson, 982. Tennis Cup, three highest scores oyer 300, 500, and 600 yards: A. C. Maisey 275, H. Ching 272. Club's Handicap Cup, 12 shoots: A. G. Ford 1160, H. Ching 1159. Trophies in the third series wero won by Freeman and Ching, tie on 5 the rifle, Ist class, and A. Thomas and Wilson off the rifle, and Max and G. J. Bobortson 2nd class.

Eipe strawberries were displayed yesterday in a number of local fruiterers' shops. The sample was good, equal to any ripening in the normal season. Strawberries in the middle of May constitutes something of a record for Nelson. The fruit was grown at Motueka. Mr. J. B. Henrys, the handieapper for the, Nelson Jockey Club, is at present in Nelson for the meeting on Friday and Saturday. •

Mr. J. Corder, chairman of the Waimea County Corneil, was appointed today to attend the annual meeting of the New Zealand Counties' Association.
