WARNING TO OTHERS
FIVE TEAES' (MOL
PROTECTION OF WOMEN
(By Telegraph.—Press Association.) 1 CHRISTCHTJRCH, This Day. In the Supreme Court to-day, Ronald Brown, Albert James William Grennell, and Raymond George Milton Caesar, all youths employed as stablehands; on charges of rape were each sentenced to five years imprisonment. The Crown said the crime- was the very worst in its class.
His Honour Mr. Justice Adams said that on account of the prisoners' youth aiijl: the recommendation to mercy ho had given very anxious consideration to the case. The offence, short of murder, was one of the gravest under the climinal law. It was absolutely necessary in the interests of virtue, pur-, ity, and the safety of women that in every case where such an offence was clearly proved, that the Court should impose a sentence that would encourage the hope 'of a warning to others. It was impossible in. the present case to do anything except impose a substantial sentence, which, however, would be lighter than usual on account of the prisoners' youth and the jury's recommendation.
