AX APPRECIATION
_J ■+. LATE MX. S. BKEDIX "C.W." writes: — "I am rather surprised that so little attention has been paid in the Press to the untimely death .-.of the late Mr. S. Bredin, chemist, for in many ways he was a very remarkable man. Born iv Londonderry he came of an old Ulster family, being a nephew of the late Sir Robert Hart, for many years head of the Chinese Customs, and well known as au authority on Chinese financial affairs. Mr. Bredin was educated at Foylc College and Dublin. He adopted the profession of a chemist, laying special stress upon its analytical side, and becoming well known as manager ni a leading firm of chemists in Drogheda. Coming out to Jfcw Zealand ho occupied a position as manager of a firm in the South, but for health reasons he finally came north and settled in Wellington, where he purchased the business of Mr. 1). J. Orr, Lambton quay. Here he established himself as a chemist, soon becoming known as a careful and accurate dispenser and analyst, his services being" specially esteemed by members of the medical profession. Mr. Bredin always evinced a keen interest in literature, retaining an interest in literary matters until his death. He had many friends in Wellington who esteemed him as much for his modest and unassuming manner as for his professional experience. By his death Wellington lost an exceptionally sincere and clever gentleman who led a retiring but justly esteemed life, and his death at a comparatively early age has been much deplored. He leaves a widow and daughter of seven.
