BALDWIN'S SPEECH

MR. AVERY'S OPINION

(Received Sth February, 2 p.m.)

LONDON, 7th'February. Mr. Leopold Amery, speaking at Birmingham, said that Mr. Baldwin s speech on Wednesday had given Conservatives a clear and definite issue on which to fight with the certainty of victory. Safeguarding would be henceforward their main constructive policy in : dealing with/ unemployment. He said the ex-Prime Minister's declaration against food taxes, if literally interpreted, would preclude a substantial advance in Imperial preference and cut off any hope of progress toward the goal of economic unity of the Empire. Mr; Amery said he could not accept a flat negative as meeting the urgency of the situation at home and in the Empire. '.'..-. , >
