MEXICAN PRESIDENT
ATTEMPT ON HIS LIFE
PART OF POLITICAL PLOT
MEXICO CITY, 6th February.
The Mexican authorities believ* that the attempt on the life of President Eubio is part of a widespread plot. On orders from the Department of the Interior seven additional persons have been arrested. Their identity has not been revealed.
President Itubio was not seriously injured, and the slug has been removed from his left jaw. The President's wife and niece, a military aide and a bystander were grazed by other bullets when the youth, presumably a partisan of Jose Vasconcelos, clothed in black, fired six shots in the President's automobile before the National Palace. The' assassin stubbornly refused to talk, and was placed under a heavy guard. Accomplices of the assassin, one of whom was a woman, attempted to escape from the cycle policemen, who caughtJtho youth, who wore Catholic insignia, to escape detection. :
An indescribable impression of regret is visible everywhere among citizens, who earlier iv the day were in tho best of humour at the peaceful and orderly manner in which President Eubio had assumed office. Representatives of all political factions expressed disgust at Ike cold-blooded attempt to murder. Seven persons have been arrested on suspicion., of conspiracy to assassinate. ' •
A close censorship was immediately established.
It is authoritatively reported that the assassin has admitted to tho War Secretary, General Amaro, that he is Miguel Flores, aged 22 years, a student follower of Vasconcelos, who was the defeated anti-re-electionist Presidential candidate. He states that the Vasconcelistas hatched a plot to kill Bubio and his entire Cabinet, and exPresident Portes Gil, and produce governmental chaos and seize control. " The police are watching closely for further trouble, the exact seriousness of which they are unable to ascertain as yet. .
