NGAIO PUBLIC LIBRARY
Five years ago, when the suburb of Ngaio was much smaller than it is today, the residents, largely through the enthusiasm of Mr. 11. L. Cummings, chairman of the Ngaio Progressive Association, decided to rate themselves to provide a local hall. An endeavour was also made to make the hall a community centre, with a public library. A committee was elected, and through its efforts money was raised and the library started, and carried on under voluntary supervision. The circulation has grown to such an' extent— over ip,ooo.books are issued each year, and the number of subscribers is nearly ISO — that it is felt that the time has arrived for closer-supervision of .the library, under a single, person, and for its maintenance by the public. At a meeting of subscribers and resident last night, presided over by Mr. T. D. H. Hal), chairman of the local library. committee, a motion was passed requesting the City Council to take over the library and run it as part of the city system. Appreciation of the work done in the past by the voluntary workers was expressed. ,
