AMATEUR ATHLETICS

UNDER ELECTRIC LIGHT

OLYMPIC CLUB'S EVENING

This summer's . unsettled weather has

been particularly ilistnrbitig to the sport of amateur ath}cti<»; ; . and oiie 'meeting after another has sirffered1 cither postponement or abandonment as the result of rain. It was very gratifying to the oflleials of thq Olympic Amateur Athletic

Club, therefore, to iiud the conditions fine

for the meeting run by the club on the Basin Keservo last evening after rain had made the ground unsuitable on Wednbsday. It was., scarcely, 'a, true summer's night, as there was a dariii> chilliness, but the sUy wjis clear, and the track, although on the heavy side, and slippery for the cyclists, had had an opportunity of improving. :?i The meeting amply demonstrated that, given favourable circumstances, athletics can still provide plenty of interest to i3tho public j.'.aniTthere were some splendid' "cbnt'estsT" 'Tlfeofficials carried through the programme in their accustomed efficient manner.'aDd there, could have been few dull'iiiiqments'for the crowd which, as nearly as' cd.uM be estimated in 'the dark--I)9bs, numbered about 1000. frfo outstanding performers were seen in actioriHn,the, sprints, but the ;handicapper Jiad-donei-his woik;well, and. the handicap" men fought out some keen finishes. Over the middle distances W. Ogg was definitely superior, and it was a pity that H. E. B. Newton, of Wanganui, was not'present to be matched against the local'man. The ladies were well to the fore, and their races were a feature of the evening. Misses Wilson, Kench, Millar, Sharp, and Blatherwick, all showed good fotjn: ~.-,The.:.cyclists were- also well catered~for, r aild in the A'grade hanj dicap events J. Cars well rode in particu; larly convincing-.ia^hion. A^ junior club' 'championship, over three distances,.-. resulted in wins for'F. Blackest in 'the half and three-quarter mile races, and he was second to A. Pennington in the mile.
