SYNOPSIS OF LAST 24 HOURS.

The recent cyclone is now passing away eastwards, its centre having crossed the northern portion of the North Island during Wednesday night. Rain was fairly general yesterday and last night and heavy at places in tho North Island and\ in Canterbury. In the latter district the heavy rain ceased during the afternoon and by this morning there was a marked, improvement in evidence over the greater part of the Dominion. Winds have become southerly generally since last night and they have been strong at times from Cook Strait northwards, but otherwise light to moderate.
