Birt and Co., Ltd., of Sydney, announce the retirement of the chairman and managing director, Sir Owen Cox, M.L.C. Sir Owen will remain a member of the board of Birt and Co., Ltd., with which he has been associated ever since he came to Sydney 31 years ago. During the war period Sir Owen Cox was Deputy Controller of. Oversea Shipping, chairman of Overseas Shipping Representatives' Association of Australia, member of Commonwealth Shipping Board, chairman of Overseas Central Committee of Australia, handling British Government requisitioned steamers in Australia, and chairman of tl\e Imperial Government Frozen Meat Shipping- Committee. Throughout the war was president of the New Zealand Soldiers' Reception Society (Sydney), executive member of the New South Wales Soldiers' Amelioration Committee, and executive member of the New South Wales branch of the Australian Red Cross Society. Sir Owen, who has been in Europe for the past twelve months, is expected to visit Australia early this year. He will be succeeded by Mr. T. S. Gordon as chairman and managing director. Mr. Gordon has been in the service of the company for about 27 years. He went through the various departments, and in 1908 was sent to New Zealand for the firm. He returned three years later. Mr. Gordon was chair^nan of the Overseas Shipping Representatives' Association at the time of the visit of the British, delegation of shipowners to Australia.
