The unauthorised transfer of approximately £160 from the Dannevirke branch of the Commercial Bank to some person at present unknown took place this morning between 10.15 and 10.20. During the temporary absence at the rear of the building of the teller, Mr. Gimblett, some person entered the premises, which are situated in the main thoroughfare, opposite tho_ post office, and making the most of his opportunity walked out with a roll of single notes. The only other member of the-'stuff...was the manager, Mi\ E. Chisholm, who was in his private offieo at the' rear of the chamber, where public business is transacted, and the money was in the teller's drawer on the inside of a four-foot counter. The door of the grille was closed. Tho individual who made the daring theft had to open tho door of tho grille and reach over the counter to get the notes from tho drawer. The manager, hearing a noise, came from his office to investigate. All he saw was a shadow on the window dividing off the compartment where the ledgers are kopt. On Mr. Gimblett 's return he mentioned the incident, and an investigation of the cash was immediately made, and the loss of the bundle of notes was discovered.
