AT HAWERA

SILVERMINE'S SMART EFFORT

GOSHAWK AT LAST

By Telegraph from "Vedette." Such torrential rain fell in Hawera on Wednesday night that early yesterday morning the committee of the Egmont Racing Club met to consider abandoning the second day in favour of a date early next year. It was decided, however, to proceed with the gathering, although very small fields in three races looked certain, and the forbidding morning still with light rain suggested a meagre' attendance. This last was fulfilled, and there were three one-dividend races. Surprisingly enough the track, well rolled between

aces, and with a drying wind, recovered l; i remarkable manner. The afternoon was Alj ne and those present had some really in- r-7 cresting racing. The totalisator returns "' aturally slumped considerably, the ligures TO Dr the day being £12,787, compared with i 22,537 last year. This made the total de- 3 eit for the meeting £15,295 10s. The hange of dates was a most unfortunate 3 enture. „ ■ The features of the day were Silverline's win ovCr n middle distance at his rst attempt, and Goshawk's success, so ■ jng expected. Silvermine was well ridden ?:,, y young K. Voitre and well tested, al- °J hough opinions differed about the merit 10l £ his win in n slow run race, lie made * n be pace early and then allowed Opa to ' sla o on in front. Yoma actually appeared Ta 0 head him off a furlong from home, but 11 iilvermine responded well under pressure i; 11 nd ca;ne on to score. J' 5 Goshawk, like most of the Magpies, was m iOt too well suited by the soft track; ' ut at the finish he was much too good J?J or Gold Dawn. He is a very fit horse st ' a iow, and looks like being very hard to r o< eat in'his holiday engagements. The apirentice, B. Burgess, with a 51b allowance, ras. put up on him and he rode him well. „ OKAIAWA HURDLES. Democratic was a good favourite, but at j ■ . liberal price in this field of moderates, onsidering his recent flat form. Joke 3 . rorm, Diana's Lad, and Brigadier Bill ed Democratic for six furlongs, and then Vaitaunaha moved up smartly from the ear. Democratic went up to him with fu :ase at the half-mile, and was not after- E= yards troubled, leading over the last two s-j ences to win comfortably by a length „. rom. Joke Form, who beat Waitaunaha >y two lengths. Brigadier Bill beat Diana's jad home. Democratic quite outclassed this field, is would be expected. He will win some nore before very long. Joke Form ran a air race, and so did Waitaunaha. Diana's uad cut up badly in the soft ground. ELECTRIC HANDICAP. ' Awaken and Green Linnet were practically evenly backed o£ the three runners. Awaken began best from Green Linnet, ,vith Gold Zone slow away. They raced in . :lose order this way. Awaken moved up :o Green Linnet at the turn, and beat her lome comfortably by two lengths, with al 3old Zone three lengths back .third. t c Awaken, a smart filly by Chief Ruler . "rom Wake Up, was too good for this opposition. Green Liuuet had every °I 3hance. P' MERE MERE HACK HANDICAP. Pl Just So, Roman Pearl, and Green Acre . were the best backed in a fair betting v race. Roman Pearl, St. Melba, and Marica sc began best, and Marica showed the way cc past the half-mile from St. Melba, Peg o j Black, Eoman Pearl, Just So. aud Green a . Acre. Peg Black lost her place on the top jjj turn, and the- order to. the straight was s t Marica, St. Melba, Roman Pearl, Green Acre, and Just So. Roman Pearl came f t through a furlong from home, followed ij, by Green Acre and Just So. Koraau Pearl g ( went on and won by half a length from ci Green Acre, who beat Just So by a short head. Peg Black was two lengths away w fourth, and Marica next. gi Roman Pearl with a good passage at k the turn won with a bit to spare' from ir Green Acre, who ran a decent race. Just G So again was a trifle unlucky. Peg Black gi was knocked back in the middle stages, it but for which she might have been in the v money. Marica had every chance. w TONKS STAKES. l\ . Paitonu, Merry Mint, and . Silvermine were practically equally supported, betting a being brisk considering the attendance, c: Silvermine began very smartly and led out i of the straight from Dolomite, Merry jMint, Paitonu, Yoma, and Hipo. Opa l£ moved up smartly at the five-furlong J' post and headed off Silvermine, then com- J' ing Paitonu, Hipo, Dolomite, Merry Mint, and Yoma. Yoma ran round Ins field mc- j ing for the turn and joined Opa and Sil- s^ vermine there.' Yoma actually headed Silvermine a furlong from home, where Opa ( ] was dropping back. Sil vermine, under g pressure, outstayed Yoma and beat him tl home by a good head. Hipo was six si lengths away third, just in front of Dolo- h mite, Opa, and Merry Mint, with Paitonu I 1 last. . \ ■ P Silvermine's performance was fairly im- h pressive, for he came on and beat a rare a old battler like Yoma. It was an aus- P picious start over a middle distance. r Yoma covered extra ground round the turn, but he had his opportunity to beat " Silvermine, who outstayed him. Hipo ran B a pood race, and Opa showed up surpris- ' ingly well. Dolomite again shaped moderately, while Merry Mint and Paitonu ran ' a good deal below expectations. TRIAL HACK HANDICAP. t Tea Taster was a very hot favourite in I a bi^ field. He began smartly from Dane- : ing Star, Kosher, and Acreljiie. Tea Taster opened up a break going to the turn from Acreline, Bon Eve, Tareka, and Espion. The order was the same into the straight, where Anbridge came through to challenge Tea Taster and run him to a long head. Tentcall was two lengths away third, with Aereline fourth and Varsity, Valma, and Arakuku next. Tea Taster won his race at the start, his good jump-out standing to him. He was being eased up at the finish. Better placed early, Anbridge might have beaten the favourite. Tentcall and Acreline both ran fair races, and Tareka, j after beginning slowly, showed great pace to the turn. Dancing Star dropped out 1 early. NORMANBY HANDICAP. Melissa and Eory Mor carried the bulk of the money. Melissa and Manly led out from Valkon, Macroom, and Monsogne. Melissa and Valkon led Manly, Macroom, and Monsogne at the half-mile, where Kawhakina* commenced to run round his field and Manly dropped back. Melissa and Monsogne led to the straight, from Valkon, Kawhakina, and Macroom, with Valkon weakening. Melissa was challenged first by Kawhakina, and then Manly ranged up on the outside. Manly winning by a length from Kawhakina, who beat Melissa by a length and a half. Monsogne was fourth and Macroom next. Manly was .handled differently from on the first dny and he finished in good style. It was rather a striking reversal due to the change o£ tactics. Kawhakina ran one of his typical races, dropping out early and coming fast over the last halfmile. Melissa ran a sound race, and Macroom and Monsogne ran just fair races. Rory Mor shaped badly. WAIMATE HANDICAP. Gold Dawn was a better favourite than Goshawk in th c field of three. They raced in line for a furlong, with Gold Dawn slightly in front, and then Llanore and Gold Dawn drew away from Goshawk. Racing to the turn Goshawk made up liis leeway again and came on to win very easily by three lengths from Gold Dawn, who beat Llanore by half a length. Goshawk was not suited by the Rrouncl, but for all that he was too good for this field, and will win a race, bar accidents, in Auckland. Gold Dawn stayed just too well for Llanorc. INAHA HACK HANDICAP. Make Up, Marjoram, and Chopin carried solid support in the best betting race of the day. Rernora led out of the straight, from Chopin, Make Up, Marjoram, and Singer. Eemora and Marjoram were in front at the six-furlong post from Chopin, Make Up, and Singer, with Calamine a length or so away. Chopin moved up on the rails at the half-mile and joined Marjoram, with Singer also up on the outside and Make Up handy. Chopin was first into the straight, with Make Up and Marjoram challenging. A great race home saw Chopin the first to weaken, and Make Up on the outside appeared to head Marjoram. Then Marjoram came with a last effort to score from Make Up by a head. Chopin was nearly "two lengths away, with Calamin,e fourth and Singer next. All three pladed horses raced right up to their best form, and the freshest horse in Marjoram did best in ,i punishing finish. No doubt both Make Up and Chopin were feeling the effects of their recent strenuous campaign, but they stuck on well. I

Calamine, ridden more patiently, did not improve on her first day effort, but she I was galloping over a longer journey. j Singer ran another really good race.
