THE MEAT INDUSTRY
SCIENTIFIC SURVEY
ENGINEERS CONFER
The third annual conference of refrigeration engineers of the different freezing works in the Dominion, convened by the New Zealand Meat Producers' Board, is being held in Wellington to-day.
Tho conference is being attended by representatives from practically every freezing company in the Dominion. The chair was taken this morning by Mr. David Jones, M.P., chairman of the Meat Board. In extending a welcome to those present, Mr. Jones referred to the fact that the conference this year was of especial importance, as the Meat Board had arranged for the attendance of the members of the expedition from England who recently arrived in the Dominion in connection with the scientific survey of our frozen meat industry. This survey is headed by Dr. Ezer Griffiths, F.R.S., of tho National Physical Laboratory, who has a world-wide reputation- in regard to temperatures and humidity, etc. Dr. Griffiths is accompanied by Dr. Vickery, of the Low Temperature Research Station,, Cambridge, and assistants. '
Iv the course of a very interesting address, Mr. Jones referred to a consultation between the board and Sir Wm. Hardy, chairman of tho Food Investigation Board at Home, when the latter gave it as his strong opinion tliat a detailed scientific suTvey was necessary, following the meat through from the works in New Zealand until arrival, on Smithfield Market, and giving particular study to temperatures, humidity, air velocity, etc. This consultation was the origin of the expedition being sent out to New Zealand. The Meat Board, said Air. Jones, was sharing the cost of the survey with the Empire Marketing Board and the Scientific Research Department at Home. The co-operation of all these bodies with the Scientific Research Department at this end must result in great benefits being derived from tho survey of the industry.
The conference will discuss some notes prepared by Mr. John Frascr, general manager of the board, relating to the freezing, storing, and' transport of New Zealand frozen meat.
Addresses will also be given by Dr. Griffiths, F.R.S., and Dr. Vickery.
