DUNEDIN'S NEW ORGAN
Strong words against the persistent rumours of the pitch and quality of the gift organ in Dunedin's new Town Hall ■were, expressed at a meeting of the Bunedin City. • Council, states the "Star." Councillor Clark said the organ was one of the most magnificent gifts the city had received. Eegardiug the pitch of the organ somo very wise people knew something that nobody else knew. They had some secret method -of obtaining information, and they had circulated the report that the old pitch had been "abandoned, and-that in a few years' time very large sums of money would have to be spent to bring the organ up to the proper universal pitch. The supervisor's report on the pitch was satisfactory, and was answer to the:"prophets of evil." The pitch was .suitable for all -purposes, being philharmonic C 522. Councillor Begg: "And what does that mean?" Councillor Mitchell: "Low pitch." (Laughter.) Councillor Clark .said that three years ago the musical instrument makers decided on, a "universal pitch, and the organ Vas.tuned to that^pitch, the same ,as. the Melbourne organ and other organs now being -manufactured. 'I hope that people will now cease circulating these most objectionable rumours about our organ and realise what a splendid gift we have in an organ unexcelled in any part of New Zealand." Councillor Mitchell said more nonsense had been talked about the organ than I anything else in Dunedin in the past two weeks. He was sure the citizens would appreciate its qualities when the Town Hall was opened. The Mayor sxplamed that; 522 meant the vibrations. The First Church organ was of 017 pitch, so that the two organs would be very close in pitch. The rumours were started by somebody,-and, strange as it was in such cases, the originator had been traced. He intended to have something to say to the founder of the rumour. If anybody said anything disparaging about the organ the citizens should ask them to. point to a betteonc. ■ ■ :
