NEW TENNIS CLUB
Public interest in tennis in Wellington was further exemplified on Saturday, when some eighty players attended the opening ceremony of the recently-formed Northland Catholic Tennis Club. The inaugural meeting was held on 4th September last, when a strong committee was appointed to manage the club's affairs, during its opening season. date two hard courts have'been laid in the club's grounds on The Rigi, Northland, and all arrangements were well in hand for the opening ing ceremony, which took place under ideal conditions on Saturday. The nets were lowered while, in the course of a brief address, the Rev. Father Smyth extended a hearty welcome to the visitors from city and suburban clubs. He traced the history of..the. formation .of the club and, wishing ifrxivery-success in the years to come, declared it officially opened for play. -Father Smyth served the first ball, after which an enjoyable afternoon's tennis was indulged in, afternoon tea being served by the lady members. The popularity -of,the new club has exceeded all expectations, and it is evident that the membership list:will have to be closed almost;immediately-... .-.; ■'-.-: -:...:.
