j The last woek has tieen a very full (Oae for croquet playera, aad many enjoyable games have taken place. Tho weather has "been good and in most cases the lawns are playing well. Unfortunately several clubs have had to withdraw one or more teams from the inter-club games, but all those left in are very keen. Pollock Stars. The holders, Mesdames O'Donnell and Gardner (Kelburn), were challenged by Mesdames Butcher and Leadbeater (Karori), and played during the week. The Kelburn pair were too strong a combination for their opponents, and Still retain the stars. Khandallah are the next challengers. Association Ferns. Island Bay having defaulted their game to St. Augustine's, tho next challengers, Waimarie played for these trophies yesterday aad after a splendid game succeeded in carrying them home. Mesdames Gillbanks and Hughes represented-the holders and Mesdames W. S. Judd and Kelly the winners. All the players found the lawn rather tricky, and four by Mrs. Hughes and five by Mrs. Kelly were the best breaks, but all clips were- on the rover hoop together. The game finished, Waimarie 26, St. Augustine's 22. M'Kenzie Cups. The holders,,. Woburn, were challenged by Mesdames Ballinger and Christie, Kelburn, who secured an , easy win from Mesdames Monks and Ellis. Eastbourne are next on the list to play. King Brooches. • Mesdame^ Hendry and Wood, Hutt, successfully resisted a challenge from Mesdames Andrews and Barker, Hautana, and are still the holders. Waimarie play next." New Book. "Peg" has to acknowledge receipt of a new book, "Croquet and How to Play It;" by Arthur G. F. Boss, Christchurch. It is an excellent publication couched in simple, language and the directions put in such simple form that it must prove of great assistance to all. croquet players. Beginners and also proficient players will find much to interest them, some of the more advanced games set out being well worth studying. St/Augustines. The official opening of the St. Augustines Club took place on Saturday, when there were representatives from all the Wellington clubs. The visitors were received by the president, the Rev. Mr. Ramson and Mrs. Eamson, and Mrs. Hughes, hon. secretary. The Mayor of Petone, Mr. M'Kenzie, who was accompanied by Mrs. M'Kenzie, declared the club open and wished the members a very successful season. He took the opportunity to present to Mrs. Norton Smith the Sprott Cup, won during the previous season. Mrs. Eamson and Mrs. M'Kenzie received dainty bouquets-: and: later the Mayoress played the first ball through the hoop. The competitions drew big fields and resulted: Angles, Mrs. Rhodes-Williams (Kelburn); squares, Mrs. Ramsay (Wellington); golf, Mrs. M'Donald (Island Bay); tunnel, Mrs. May (Ngaroma). Mr. Ramson received much sympathy in the unfortunate accident which has necessitated the use of crutches, and all expressed the hope that he would soon completely recover. Ngaio Club., The newly-formed club at Ngaio held its official opening last Wednesday in ideal weather, many visitors being present from the clubs in the Wellington district. Mrs. E. J. Chatwin; president, and Mrs. W. E. Nichols,,hon. seetetary, received the guests, and in welcoming them Mrs. Chatwin, who has generously given the use of her lawn, said how much they all regretted that their vice-president, Mrs. Thompson, could not bo with them. They were much indebted to her for kindly assistance in forming the club, which now had 28 active members and several on the honorary list. Mrs. W. S. Austin, president of the Wellington Association, extended the association's good wishes and trusted the club would soon join, up with the association. Mrs. E. M'Kenzie added further felicitations and pointed out the advantages to be; gained from participation in inter-club games. The Mayoress, Mrs. G. A. Troup, said it gave her very great pleasure to open still another croquet club for.the Wellington ladies, as she was well aware of the great enjoyment that they would gain in health-and pastime. She congratulated the club in the delightfully sheltered situation of the lawn, and after playing the first ball declared the season' open. Dainty posies wero presented '. to Mrs. Troup and Mrs. Chatwin. Afternoon tea was served by the members and many competitions held. . The committee is Mrs. M'Arthur, treasurer; and Mesdames Bringans/M'Nab, and Williamson, with officers ex officio. ' Seatoun Club. "Members' Day" was held recently and proved such a success that it has been decided to hold them regularly in the first Wednesday in each month. Soeir.l members of the club join with the active members and an enjoyable time results. Mesdames Higgins, Snelling, and Coventry donated the trophies, which.were won aa follows:— Angles, Mrs. Jackson; golf, Mrs. Davis; ladder; Mrs. Coventry; peg, Mrs. Morton; break,-Mrs. Robertson. Personal. ■ ' Mrs. D. Thompson (Ngaio) is spending a holiday at Rotorua. Mrs. Falder (St. Augustines) writes from London that her health has greatly improved, and she is having a delightful tour. Mrs. Be-vari (Mount Victoria) is visiting Auckland. Mrs. Fairbairn (Woburn) has been enjoying some flying in England, and lately flow from London to Paris. Mrs. Gower (Ngaxoma) is.slowly regaining her health and is able to visit the lawns. Mrs. Stonchousc (Hutt) has returned from a visit to her daughter in Invcrcargill. Several changes have taken place in club hon. secretaries: Mrs. Heuary, Wellington Club, replacing Mrs. Ashton (resigned); Mrs. Eobertson, Seatouh, vice Mrs. Page (resigned); Mrs. Martin, Ngaroma, pending Mrs. Gower >s return to office in the New Year.
