SYDNEY CIVIC CONTROL

A REFORMED COUNCIL

, The days >of the Commission which now controls the City of Sydney are numbered; the city will once again be placed under council control, on a reformed elective basis, under legislation .to be enacted this session Tho new council is likely to form tho basis of a Greater Sydney Council to which the State Government is committed, although tho majority of the metropolitan councils, if not all of tkem, are opposed to any such scheme. it tno Commission now reicninir at tho Town Hall- h a 3 not been in power lonj; enough to judge properly of its virtues—it has spent most of its time in.trying to clean up the mess that was bequeathed to it—it. has at least done this. It has brought to the Town Hall an atmosphere of quiet, dignified business efficiency which was sadly ana glaringly absent under the old council regime, with its scandals and cheap party brawls.

The Town- Hall is to-day what it ought to be: a strictly business establishment run on business, and not party political, lines. The life of the Commis sion, however,., was definitely limited under the Act which gave it birth. It also had a clear-cut object, to rid the Town Hall of its bad aldennanic smells._ Even- if its life, however, had been indefinite under the Act which made ,it operative, the State Labour Party would have given it the coup do grace once it got back into power.
